Large Colour Twist Goblet

Large Colour Twist Goblet

c1760/70

Item Ref: 227

A very large and unusual continental colour twist goblet, possibly Dutch or French. The huge thistle type bowl which is engraved around the rim has a pronounced moulded gadrooned base over a cushion knop and inverted baluster knop containing a double series twist in red green and white, all standing on a plain conical foot.

A very unusual goblet which, despite enquiries with colleagues both here and on the continent, seems to be unrecorded. The name "Angers" engraved on the bowl appears to be of French origin. This hints at a French origin for the goblet although without any others for comparison it is impossible to be entirely sure.

A fine and unusual goblet with a little light scratching to the bowl interior.
