Rare Hollow Stem Goblet

Rare Hollow Stem Goblet

C 1750

Item Ref: 393

A large and rare hollow stem goblet having a double ogee bowl with everted rim over an entirely hollow stem with swollen centre knop, all standing on a domed foot .

Hollows stem glasses are thought by some to have been introduced in reaction to the glass Excise Act of 1745/6 when glass was taxed by weight,if so it failed in this instance as this superb goblet weighs in at 438 grams almost 1 pound !!
